Internet Fraud incidents in Alexandra

1 min read

In the last 24 hours two Alexandra residents have been defrauded of thousands of dollars.

This scam has involved fraudsters, posing as Microsoft employees, calling residents and stating that viruses have been detected on their respective home computers.  During the call they ask for remote access to the victim's devices to fix the problem and/or credit card information.

Alexandra police would like to remind residents who may receive an unsolicited call of this nature not to purchase any software or services and never to give control of their computer to a third party.

Should you receive an unsolicited call regarding computer technical support Alexandra police recommend taking the caller's information down and immediately reporting it to police and to Netsafe New Zealand at www.netsafe.org.nz.
