Investigation launched after child seriously injured

1 min read

Canterbury Police are investigating the circumstances which led to a five year old boy being taken to Christchurch Hospital by ambulance with serious head injuries today (27 May 2015).

Detective Senior Sergeant Scott Anderson explains "The ongoing Police investigation has so far determined that the boy attended school this morning before returning home, as normal, at around midday. At about 1.30pm an ambulance was called to his home in Papanui and he was taken to hospital where he is in a critical condition."

Detectives have already spoken to members of his immediate family, staff at the primary school he attends and the people who have been in contact with him since he arrived home.

"The Police investigation is focussed on the events throughout the day" says Detective Senior Sergeant Anderson.

Canterbury Police are working with his family while they support their child in Christchurch Hospital.

Canterbury Police will not undertake any media interviews at this time and no further information will be released tonight.

A further update will be provided tomorrow afternoon (28 May 2015).
