Lower Hutt checkpoint notified to IPCA

1 min read

Police has today notified the Independent Police Conduct Authority regarding the checkpoint operation in Lower Hutt earlier this month which was mounted to identify people leaving an Exit International meeting.

Acting Wellington District Commander Inspector Paul Basham says Police acknowledge the concerns regarding the checkpoint.

“I reiterate our earlier comments that this operation was carried out in good faith and for good reasons. Police have a responsibility to investigate any situation where we have reasonable grounds to suspect that persons are being assisted in the commission of suicide.”

“However I am also aware of concerns around the legal basis for that checkpoint and it is appropriate that we notify this matter to the IPCA for its consideration.”
