A man was arrested overnight after Police discovered fresh graffiti on property along Gladstone Rd - a main thoroughfare of Gisborne.

A short time later Police patrols located a number of suspects, and charged a 19-year-old man.

He has been charged with Wilful Damage and has been bailed to appear in Gisborne District Court next Wednesday (13 September).

Police are not looking for anyone else in connection with the graffiti.

Police have so far found approximately 25 separate buildings, fences and a vehicle that were painted.

The damage caused is likely to run into the thousands of dollars.

"No one has the right to deface another person’s property. This is just plain outright vandalism that will cost a number of good people a substantial amount of money to rectify," says Senior Sergeant Mike Stevenson of the Eastern District Command Centre.

If anyone else’s property was damaged by graffiti, please make a report via Gisborne Central Police Station on 06 831 0700.
