At around 4pm today (Sunday 12 August 2018) Police from across Tamaki Makaurau successfully concluded an investigation into the escape of a prisoner.

The 48-year-old man was recaptured following a Police operation in Manurewa involving local armed staff and the Armed Offenders Squad.

At around 12:15pm today Police pulled over a vehicle in a traffic stop and the man fled from the vehicle. He was pursued by an officer on foot into nearby properties.

The officer cornered the man in a property and deployed OC spray and Taser in an attempt to arrest him. The offender then presented a pistol and the officer retreated and called for assistance.

The offender was soon recaptured hiding under a house in nearby McKean Avenue, Manurewa.

He will be appearing in Auckland District Court tomorrow (Monday 13 August) charged with escaping custody, and presenting a firearm at law enforcement officers. More charges are likely to follow.

Police would like to thank members of the community across Tamaki Makaurau for their assistance over the last five days while enquiries were made to locate this man.

As this matter is now before the court, Police is unable to comment further.
