Man missing in Grey River

1 min read

A search is under way to try and locate a man who was swept away in a tributary of the Upper Grey River this morning.

Emergency services were alerted about 11.30am. Police believe the missing man was four-wheel driving with a number of other vehicles when the vehicle he was in became stranded in the river and he was subsequently swept away.

A jet boat with search and rescue personnel and a white water rescue team consisting of five kayaks are on the river searching. A helicopter has also searched the area but so far there has been no sign of the missing man.

The search area is in remote country in the Ikamatua area of the West Coast. It is raining and the river is running high. Ground searches are hampered by the difficult terrain.

No further information is currently available.
