Mixed result for Nelson Bay road policing operations

1 min read

It was a mixed result for Nelson Bays Road Policing team this morning, during an early morning operation on Whakatu Drive focused on excess speed and restraints.

Police were pleased to see that nearly all drivers were wearing their seat belts, however we were disappointed at the number of speeding infringement notices that we issued.

Two drivers were caught travelling at more than 140 kilometres per hour in a 100 kmh area.   Both drivers received an immediate 28 day suspension of their drivers licence, 40 demerit points, and a substantial fine.

Other road policing operations have been conducted in the past few days across the Nelson Bays region, including at the Richmond traffic lights and on Rocks Road.

Around 70 infringement notices were issued during those operations, including for running red lights, failing to comply with traffic signals, using mobile phones while driving, and breaching graduated drivers licence conditions.

Senior Sergeant Grant Andrews wants to commend those drivers who are doing their part in keeping themselves and others safe on the road, but says there are far too many people who are taking unnecessary risks.

“Too many people have lost their lives on Nelson Bays roads already this year,” says Senior Sergeant Andrews.

“As we get closer to the Christmas/New Year period, there will be more and more people out and about on our roads.   We need everyone to play their part so we can all enjoy a safe and happy holiday season with our loved ones.”

“It’s pretty simple really – buckle up, watch your speed, and don’t drive while impaired or distracted.”

“And if you see any dangerous or concerning driving while you’re out and about, please call 111 and report it to Police.   Inconsiderate driving behaviour can be reported to *555.”
