Nelson Police urging drivers to drive responsibly on the roads this Christmas

With Christmas is only a few days away, Nelson Bays Police are out doing everything we can to make sure everyone makes it safely home for Christmas.

However, it is not just the responsibility of Police to ensure this happens – drivers and riders themselves also play a huge part in their own safety, and the safety of others, on our roads.

We have had an increased presence on our roads over the past few days and we have been disappointed by the driver behaviour we have seen.

On Wednesday night alone seven drivers were stopped and found to be over the legal alcohol in the Nelson area.

Speed is still an issue a large number of vehicles being issued with infringements in the Wakefield and Brook Street areas in the past few days, as well as for using cell phones and not wearing seatbelts.

These drivers were not only putting themselves at risk, but also everyone else out on the road that night.

This year in the Tasman District we have had 25 people die on our roads – 25 too many.

No-one should have to grieve the loss of a loved one at any time, but especially during what is meant to a joyous and happy time.

I cannot urge people enough to make sure they drive responsibly and safely while out on our roads.

Please make sure any time you are in your vehicle, you drive to the conditions, are free from impairment and distractions, and everyone in your vehicle is properly restrained.

Many of you will be heading away tonight for the holiday period, meaning there will be increased traffic on the roads, so make sure you also allow plenty of time for your journey and stop for rest breaks.

We wish everyone a safe and happy holiday – we want you here for Christmas.
