One dead in Tauranga road crash

The passenger of a car has died after the vehicle he was in collided with a library bus on Welcome Bay Road, Tauranga this morning (Wednesday, 22 October).

The crash happened at approximately 9am. Early indications are that the red Holden Astra lost control and crossed the centre line after rounding a bend. The car collided with the bus travelling in the opposite direction.

The male passenger, who is believed to be in his 20s and from Tauranga, has died. The male driver of the car has been taken to Tauranga Hospital but is not believed to be seriously injured. The bus driver was not hurt.

A serious crash investigation is underway. Diversions are in place and the police are working to reopen the road as soon as possible.

Police want to hear from anyone who witnessed the crash or saw the red Holden prior to the crash and has any information that might assist the investigation.
