One fatality following serious crash south of Rangitata Road Bridge

Canterbury Police can confirm there has been one fatality following a serious crash involving a truck and car on State Highway 1 south of the Rangitata Road bridge which occurred shortly after 2pm this afternoon (29 March 2015).

The male driver and sole occupant of the car was taken to Timaru Hospital by ambulance but was confirmed as deceased on route. 

The death has been referred to the Coroner who will determine the cause of death. The driver has yet to be formally identified and no further details will be released until this process has been completed and next of kin have been informed.

The male driver of the truck was uninjured but was very shaken.

Canterbury Police investigations into the crash are ongoing.

SH1 will remain closed until at least 8pm tonight while Canterbury Police Serious Crash Unit complete a scene examination.  Diversions are in place however there are no significant delays to travellers in the area at this time. 

Canterbury Police would like to hear from anyone who witnessed the crash and either couldn't stay at the scene after the crash or were unable to stop.
