Police and Plunket working together to keep our tamariki safe

1 min read

Southern District Police and Plunket will be working together to promote the safe and correct use of child restraints.

Plunket car seat technicians and local police officers will be at The Warehouse Carpark in Dunedin between 11am to 2pm this Friday 23 March.

“Come down and have your child restraint checked”, says Constable Emily Plew.

“Having a child restraint in the car is great – but it's just as important that it’s correctly fitted and used. Correct use can literally make the difference between life and death.

“I’d also like to remind parents to restrain babies and young children in the back seats of your cars, away from the impact of the airbag. If you are in a crash, your wee ones are much safer in the back.”

NZ Police ran four check points in Southern District prior to Christmas and found that more than 80 percent of the child restraints checked had issues.

“Some were not installed correctly, others needed the straps adjusted to fit the child correctly. It is important to check child restraints regularly to keep our children safe.” says Constable Plew.
