Police appeal for witnesses to fleeing driver

1 min read

At about 10pm on Friday 25 May Hawke’s Bay Police observed a car being driven dangerously on State Highway Two at Awatoto.

Police attempted to pull over the vehicle but the driver failed to stop and a pursuit was initiated.

The fleeing driver continued into Napier CBD where the Police unit abandoned the pursuit for safety reasons.

At the roundabout of Marine Parade and Warren Street, the fleeing driver was seen to dangerously overtake and cut in front of a truck.

He continued on at speed through the streets of Napier and was seen a short time later to drive through a red light in Tennyson Street where he again narrowly avoided a collision with a bus travelling through a green light.

Acting Sergeant Grant Marshall says drivers who choose to drive like this, not only endanger themselves, but all other road users and pedestrians.

“At the time he fled from Police the roads were still busy with people out and about on a Friday night, we’re lucky this didn’t end in tragedy."

Police are making enquiries to locate the driver and are appealing for anyone who saw the Holden Commodore, which is dark green or silver, being driven dangerously to contact us.

“In particular we want to hear from the truck driver who was almost caught up in a crash with this driver.”

Any witnesses can contact Acting Sergeant Grant Marshall of Hawke’s Bay Police on 06 873 0500.
