Police are appealing for information following a shooting incident in Whenuapai this morning.

Police were called after a man was found with gunshot wounds at a property on Brigham Creek Road just before 4.30am.

The 33-year-old man was taken to Auckland Hospital, and is now in a critical condition.

Detective Senior Sergeant Marcia Murray says while the investigation is in its early stages, initial enquiries suggest the man was shot outside the address, on the road.

"We're urging anyone who may have seen or heard anything suspicious in the area to please contact Police," she says.

"We are trying to establish exactly what happened in the lead up to this incident, so anyone who might have any information is encouraged to call Waitemata Crime Squad on 09-839 0697 or report anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."

Enquiries are ongoing to locate the offender.

Police are examining the scene.

Part of Brigham Creek Road between State Highway 16 and Joseph McDonald Drive was closed earlier as Police responded, but has since reopened.

However, Police remain in the area and traffic flow may be slow and delays are expected.

Police would like to thank members of the public for their patience.

No further information is available at this stage.
