Police Media Advisory: Release of Crewe Investigation Review

Media are invited to the release this morning of the police review of the 1970 Crewe murders.

A report will also be released from Mr David Jones QC, who has provided independent oversight and assessment of the review.

This will be done with an embargoed lock-up arrangement starting at 10.30am at Counties Manukau District Headquarters. Media can start arriving at 10.00am. This is to allow media time to read the report ahead of the embargo lifting at midday. A news conference will then follow at 12.10pm.

The reports will be provided in hard copy. A DVD disk (not memory stick) with additional appendices, including photographs, will also be available. All the material will be made public on the Police website at midday.

Present at the news conference will be Acting Deputy Police Commissioner Grant Nicholls, head of the review team Detective Superintendent Andy Lovelock and David Jones QC, who provided independent oversight of the review. Lawyer Natalie Walker will also be present to represent Rochelle Crewe.

Please note the lock-up and news conference is available only to journalists from accredited media organisations. Please bring appropriate identification with you.

This will be the only opportunity for media to put questions to Acting Deputy Commissioner Nicholls and Detective Superintendent Lovelock. No further interviews will be given. Commissioner Mike Bush will release a statement at 12pm. He is not giving interviews however a short video clip will be on the police website. (www.police.govt.nz).

Please note that by attending, media agree to the following conditions:

• No stories about the contents of the report are to be published by any media outlet until midday.
• No information about the contents of the report is to be published on social media until after midday.
• No pictures are to be published from the venue until after midday, including on social media.
• No information other than stories for publication at midday are to be transmitted during the lock up period.
• A limited number of hard copies of the report are available and distribution will be restricted to one copy per media outlet.

These arrangements are to provide a fair and equitable opportunity for media to cover the report's release and your cooperation is appreciated.

As Counties Manukau DHQ is an operational police station, media are asked to avoid filming members of the public and police staff going about their regular business.

Timing:

10:00am: Venue is opens for media to set up.
10.30am: Review reports and associated documents distributed to media under a midday embargo.
12.00pm: Embargo lifts - stories may be published.
12.10pm: News conference starts.

Where: Counties Manukau District Headquarters, 42 Manukau Station Rd, Manukau City, Auckland.

Refreshments will be provided.

Media please assemble in front of the Counties Manukau police headquarters building where you will be met and escorted to the venue. You will be asked to register your details on arrival.

The news conference will be held in the same space where the media will read the documents.
