Quick actions of Police staff were a life saver for a Hamilton man following a vehicle crash in Te Rapa yesterday.
Constables Brendon Veysey and Sam Watson were on the scene within minutes after a vehicle heading north on Te Rapa Road travelled across the median garden through a steel fence and crashed into the Target Furniture building on the opposite side of the road.
The officers, who were attending an incident nearby, ran to the crash scene where they removed the victim from the car and performed CPR as the victim’s breathing was deteriorating.
While CPR was continued by Constables Watson and Christie Welton, an AED (Automatic External Defibrillator) was located at a nearby supermarket by Constable Veysey.
Thanks to the continued CPR and the AED the victims breathing became more regular. Advanced Paramedics and ambulance staff were on the scene shortly after and the victim was transported to hospital for further treatment.
The officers at the scene commented that the incident unfolded just like they had been prepared for through their first aid training.
“Police are trained to deal with critical situations however there is a big difference between training and real life. These officers kept their cool, with their actions ultimately proving life-saving,” said Senior Sergeant Neil Faulkner.
