Search and rescue operation for missing women and child

1 min read

A search and rescue operation is underway in the Silverpeaks, near Dunedin, after a group of four people were reported overdue from a walk this afternoon.

The group of three 22-year-old women and a four year-old girl were reported overdue to Police this evening after failing to return from a short walk.

Family members raised concerns with Police after they hadn't heard from the group since 4pm.

Approximately 35 Police staff and LandSAR volunteers are currently searching, as well as search dogs and a helicopter.

The weather tonight is described as mild but Police do not believe the group are prepared for a lengthy stay in the bush and are unlikely to have food and water.

Police asks anyone who may have seen the group on any of the tracks in the Silverpeak area to contact their local Police.
