Search for missing Far North diver scaled down

1 min read

Police have scaled down the search for the missing Far North diver.

Last Thursday police received a report that a 25-year-old man had not returned from snorkelling off rocks on the eastern end of Cable Bay. His catch bag had washed ashore.

Police have named the man as Rangi Tapu, aged 25 years, from Auckland.

Police started a search using two coastguard boats, a plane and police staff. Family members helped with the search.

The Police Dive Squad, Police Search and Rescue staff along with local police staff with Far North LandSAR volunteers began searching for the man.
The dive squad carried out an 80m x 200m grid search around the area where he was last seen.

However, searchers failed to locate him, so the search was scaled down on Friday night.
Local police and family have been continuing with a shoreline search.
