Search under way for missing tramper

1 min read

West Coast Police and search and rescue volunteers are currently searching for a 32 year old French man who has been reported overdue from a tramp.

Yohan Simon, who is a New Zealand resident, was dropped off at the Karamea Bluff on Happy Valley Saddle on 18 October and was to be collected by a friend on Monday 21 October.

He did not arrive at the collection point at Glass Eye Creek Bridge and his friends spent the next three days looking for him before notifying Police that he was missing on Friday evening.

A helicopter searched the area last night and again this morning but did not find any sign of Mr Simon.

Today two dog teams and three ground search teams are in the area.

Constable Mike Voice of Westport Police said Mr Simon was well equipped and had food for a week, a tent and warm clothing. However, he said the weather in the area was atrocious.
