Secure your tools & protect your livelihood

1 min read

Police are urging tradies to protect their livelihoods by keeping their equipment and vans safe.

The trend of offenders targeting vehicles in driveways and trade vehicles on roadsides is continuing in Invercargill.

With an increase in building activity in Queenstown and Christchurch, Acting Inspector Peter Graham said there is a ready market for stolen power tools, batteries and chargers and tradies must be vigilant.

“Police are warning tradies to ensure their vehicles are left in secure locations and valuable tools are secured within their vans,” he said.

“The tougher we make it for the criminals the better, this goes for all vehicle owners, please don’t leave valuables in plain sight in your unlocked cars.”

Anyone with information on current offenders or stolen property can contact the Police anonymously via Crimestoppers 0800 555 111 or message Southern Police on Facebook.

Follow this advice to reduce the risk of offenders targeting your tools and increase the prospect of having your property returned if we track it down:

  • Ensure all tools are engraved with a name and contact phone number.
  • Keep a list of serial numbers for your tools.
  • Park your van at the back of the section overnight, not on the roadside.
