1 min read

A 45-year-old man has been sentenced to eight and a half years imprisonment following the severe assault of a Taumarunui man last year.

Wallace Schimanski pled guilty in Hamilton District Court to wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Detective Sergeant Scott Ivimey says the charge was in relation to the cowardly attack on Miro Street, Taumarunui on Sunday 1 May, 2016, which left the victim in a critical condition.

“At the time, the victim was flown to the intensive care unit at Waikato Hospital and remained in a coma for two weeks,” he says.

“We hope this sentencing provides some closure to the victim who is still recovering from his extensive and life-altering injuries.”

The victim is receiving ongoing support.

“Thanks to the excellent work carried out by the investigation team, this dangerous offender has been removed from our streets."
