On Monday, 8 October Sergeant Melanie Humphries commenced duty as the new officer in charge of Waipukurau Police Station.

Sgt Humphries joined New Zealand Police in 2003, and was first deployed in Hamilton where her passion for helping people gravitated her toward community policing roles.
Since then she has worked as the Iwi Liaison Officer in Hamilton and the Hawke’s Bay. In 2016 she was appointed to Wairoa as the Public Safety Team’s Sergeant.

“I saw this as a great opportunity to work in a predominantly Maori community and develop as a supervisor. Wairoa is a great place to live and work; the team there is fantastic and the community is amazing,” Sgt Humphries says.

As much as Sgt Humphries loved Wairoa, she wanted to move back to Central Hawke’s Bay to be closer to family.

“I’m privileged to now be working in Central Hawke’s Bay, based at the Waipukurau station. The community hosted a pōwhiri on Monday 8 October and I was humbled and moved by the warm welcome I received.”
