Stay safe on tradies day this Friday

2 min read

Canterbury Police urge business and bosses who are putting on ‘shout’s for their staff this Friday to plan ahead how everyone will get home safely.

For many trades and construction companies Friday is the last day of work and traditionally this has been marked with an end of year ‘shout’.  With the lower alcohol limits in force Police urge staff and hosts to plan how everyone will get home safely.

Canterbury Road Policing Manager, Inspector Al Stewart, said “Canterbury Police are running their second alcohol focus activity in the lead up to the festive season this Friday.  Additional Police staff are rostered on to run checkpoints across the City/District and anyone stopped, no matter what the time of day, will be breath-tested.  Last week a driver at a checkpoint was caught over the limit, without a valid licence and with an open crate of Bourbon and Cola on the passenger seat.  We urge everyone to reflect on their drinking behaviour  and the potentially tragic consequences of driving while drunk.”

If you’re finishing work on site for the summer break make sure valuables are locked away out of sight and keys are not left in unlocked vehicles.  Set alarms and consider adding your asset list to www.SNAP.org.nz , a free initiative by New Zealand Police aiming to prevent burglary and property offending and make it harder for offenders to sell stolen property in New Zealand.

With the advent of payWave keep your wallets and bags safe when you’re out socialising and report any loss to your bank straight away then to Police.   If you’re entering your PIN number make sure no-one is ‘shoulder surfing’ you and stop yourself becoming a potential victim of fraud.

If you’re having an office party or ‘shout’ Canterbury Police encourage you to register it on www.GoodOne.org.nz where there are great tips to hosting a safe and fun party that everyone can enjoy.

“Other than moderating your consumption of alcohol, drinking water and eating food regularly are the two most effective ways of controlling the effects of alcohol” said Senior Sergeant Spite, Canterbury Police Alcohol Harm Reduction Manager.

Police ask everyone in Canterbury to think safe this festive season and make sure the 2014/15 summer is one to remember for all the right reasons.
