Today Police were advised two trampers had not returned from the Routeburn Track.
Search and rescue (SAR) were deployed in a helicopter along the track and located a woman in one of the huts.
Her male companion is believed to have died after falling down a slope.
Police and SAR will be returning to the track tomorrow in an effort to locate her companion, conditions permitting.
No further information will be released tonight. Police expect to release further information tomorrow.
