Whangarei Police have arrested and charged two men in connection to a spate of damage to vehicles and vehicle tyres throughout the Whangarei area.

In June 2018 police received over 84 reports from members of the public of significant damage to their vehicles.

Police are still dealing with over 100  complaints of vehicles that had numerous tyres slashed or were set alight, leaving the owners stranded and highly inconvenienced.

At the time police acknowledged the many victims of this crime spree and were aware it would cost owners a considerable amount of money to replace their tyres.

“I would like to thank members of the public that provided information and all of the police staff who worked diligently on this inquiry from the initial reporting through to the investigation and charging of these offenders.  We are mindful that these matters will progress through the courts and we are still interested in hearing from anyone that might have further information ,” said Acting District Commander Inspector Justin Rogers.

“A team of detectives has been working on the inquiry and they were determined to hold the offenders to account.  It’s been a challenging investigation for our team that has affected a large number of victims and we hope these arrests bring some reassurance to the community. Enquiries are ongoing and police are still working through contacting the large number of victims of this crime,” he said.

Two men aged 26 and 28 years old have been arrested and charged with offences relating to the attacks on vehicles and further charges are imminent.  They have been remanded in custody and are next due to appear in the Whangarei District Court on 20 August, 2018.

If you have any further information that could help our investigation, please contact Detective Sergeant David Hamilton Whangarei CIB  (09) 430 4596.
