Two people die in crash in Christchurch

1 min read

Two people have died following a crash at the corner of Cuthberts Road and Breezes Road, Christchurch overnight.

The crash occurred shortly after 2.30am.

Shortly before the crash the vehicle had been involved in a fleeing driver incident. Police tried to stop the vehicle on Breezes Road however the driver failed to stop. Police followed the vehicle for less than a minute before this was self-abandoned due to the dangerous nature of the driving.

Less than one minute after Police stopped following the vehicle it was found crashed at the corner of Cuthberts Road and Breezes Road. It was a single vehicle crash.

Three people were in the vehicle with two dying at the scene. A third person suffered moderate injuries and was treated by ambulance staff. One of the people who died in the crash was the driver.

“The crash was a tragic outcome that nobody wants. Police encourage any driver who is signalled to stop by Police to do just that. It is not worth putting your life, your passenger’s life, or anyone else’s life at risk,” Superintendent Lane Todd, Canterbruy Metro Commander.

A full investigation into the circumstances of the crash has started and, as is standard practice, the Independent Police Conduct Authority has been notified.

The area around the crash scene is closed and diversions are in place. Motorists are asked to avoid the area.
