Police are continuing to investigate a fatal crash that occurred on Atarau Road, Ikamatua on Sunday 10 September.

Police were notified by a member of the public around 8:20pm after they came across a vehicle upside down in the Otututu River.

A passer-by has come across the crash and rescued the three children, aged eleven, nine and six. The driver of the car, the children’s father, was later found to be deceased by emergency services.

He was 32-year-old Tamati James Rae, from Kaikoura.

The vehicle is in the process of being recovered and the road remains closed as the Serious Crash Unit inspects the scene as part of their investigation. Inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the crash are ongoing.

Police would like to acknowledge the actions of the rescuer who has saved the lives of the children as well as a local farmer who gave comfort and shelter after the crash. This has been an extremely traumatic event for all those involved, and Police and victim support are continuing to support them.
