Waikato Police seek witnesses to fatal Piopio crash

Waikato Police and emergency services staff were called to attend a two car crash on State Highway 3, south of Piopio today at approximately 2:00 pm.  

The crash involved a vehicle with one occupant travelling south and a dark grey Nissan hatchback carrying two occupants travelling north.

The driver of the north-bound Nissan died at the scene and the female passenger was airlifted to Waikato Hospital in a serious condition.

The driver of the second vehicle was treated for minor injuries and shock.

Police are working to identify and advise the deceased next of kin and provide support for all involved.

The Serious Crash Unit and Police are investigating the cause of this crash and the death will be subject to a coronial inquest.

Police would like to hear from anyone who may have seen the crash or observed a dark grey Nissan Hatchback traveling north on State Highway 3, anywhere south of Piopio between 12:00-2:00 pm Wednesday 9 November 2016.

This crash appears to be another avoidable tragedy on our roads which will effect a large number of people and our sympathy and condolences go out to the family and friends of the deceased and all others involved.
