Thanks to the assistance of the public and media, the body of a woman found yesterday morning in Tauranga has now been identified.

Tauranga Police yesterday called for the public's help to identify the woman, who was found dead at the Kopurererua Stream, near Waihï Road in Tauranga about 6.15am.

"Thanks to the media's assistance and information from the public, we have now been able to identify the woman and are in the process of making contact with her family," Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Turner said.

There were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death, he said.

"Once the family has been notified, we expect to be able to name her and the matter will be referred to the Coroner. Again, we acknowledge the public and the media for their help in identifying her, which means that she can be appropriately returned to her loved ones."
