New Zealand Police answers questions from potential recruits in our latest recruitment video ‘Breaking News’.

The video, which has just gone live on the New Zealand Police Facebook page, is a fast-paced clip with quick-fire questions and answers in a news report style.

Like last year’s hugely successful ‘World’s Most Entertaining Police Recruitment Video’, the stars of the ‘Breaking News’ video are our very own New Zealand Police officers.

There are some special guest appearances too including Wellington Paranormal’s Minogue and O’Leary, Oscar Kightley and comedian David Correos.

“A common thing we hear from people considering joining Police is that they have a lot of questions and they want to put these to some of our staff,” says Police Commissioner Mike Bush.

“The ‘Breaking News’ video features our officers answering the questions people most commonly ask of us before joining up, but in a fun, creative and accessible way.

“Our organisation aspires for New Zealand to be the world’s safest country and the Government has invested significantly to help us do this by growing our overall staff numbers.

“We want to better reflect the communities we serve and this means attracting new staff from all backgrounds, but we particularly need more women, Māori, Pacific Islanders and Asians. We also need people who are keen to work in Tāmaki Makaurau.

“This innovative campaign sets out to ensure any question a potential future cop has is answered, and we’re confident that will mean more people sign up to join our fantastic organisation,” says Commissioner Bush.

Kaye Ryan, Deputy Chief Executive: People and Capability, says there is a common misconception about what type of person Police want to recruit as officers.

“We hope this video will dispel some of the myths and show people that we want to recruit New Zealanders with a variety of backgrounds.

“There are more than 30 different career paths as an officer in the New Zealand Police and we invest time in training our staff so they have the skills to face any situation.”

As well as the video, Police have also today launched the web platform ‘ChatCops’ found on the newcops.co.nz website.

‘ChatCops’ features around 70 videos with a variety of our staff talking about who they are, their role at NZ Police, what it takes to be a cop, what training involves and so much more.

Members of the public will be able to ask further questions of these ‘ChatCops’ in the coming months via email and live chat sessions.

More than 60 staff feature in the video and another 100 officers around Aotearoa are involved in the ‘ChatCops’ web platform.

“Getting staff involved in the video and ‘ChatCops’ was easy because they’re passionate about showing New Zealanders why this is such a great job,” says Acting Deputy Chief Executive Public Affairs Jane Archibald.

“Policing is an exciting and dynamic career suited to many types of Kiwis — who better to tell you that than the staff who are doing it daily.”

‘Breaking News’ has been made with advertising agency Ogilvy, and the video was directed by New Zealander Damien Shatford, who also directed last year’s recruitment video.

Background information on Police recruitment:

• How many people have gone through the RNZPC in the last year?

940 recruits have started at the Royal New Zealand Police College (RNZPC) in the last 12 months. This is the most Police has ever recruited.

• Are you on track to meet the target of 1800 extra Police by 2020?

We are making excellent, on-time progress toward delivering the growth of 1800 staff provided for by Government.
October 2018 marked the highest volume of recruits into training in one year in the history of Police.

• How much has the 2018/19 recruitment campaign cost?

The video cost approximately $460,000 to make.
Total allocated NZ Police expenditure for 2017/18 financial year is $1,250,000 for recruitment marketing, this includes the video production as well as other paid advertising online, in cinema, radio and digital channels, and events support and marketing costs.
This budget was increased from 2017/18 to reflect the increased recruitment targets

• How successful was 2017’s recruitment video in attracting new applicants?

Last year’s video resulted in around 2,500 additional applicants over what we would have previously received.
Some of these people are still working through the recruitment process.
We expect NZ Police will graduate between 200-300 additional Constabulary employees as a direct result of last year’s recruitment video.

• What is the breakdown of Maori, Pasifika and Asian recruits and applicants?

The current proportions of Maori, Pacific and Asian officers in NZ Police are below the population estimates for New Zealand.
We want to best reflect the communities we serve, for that reason NZ Police have set ourselves challenging targets for increasing the number of Maori, Pacific and Asian officers.
Maori attraction numbers have been close to their proportion of the population but not at the level we would like. Police is focusing on increasing this number going forward.
Please see attached table 1 for a further breakdown.

• How many women are Police recruiting?

231 women graduated from the RNZPC during 2017/18, this is 36 percent of all graduates.
This represents the best year of female recruitment, in both numbers and proportion that Police has ever achieved.
While these recruitment numbers are the best Police has ever achieved, the target is to achieve 50 percent of all recruits.

• What is the current make up of New Zealand Police officers by rank and gender?

Please see attached table 2.
