Constable has ‘perfect timing’
She doesn’t quite sing for her supper, but Sydenham’s
Constable Sue Davis can keep a tune better than most.
Sue is part of the long-established quartet “Perfect Timing” which
won the national ‘Sweet Adelines’ competition earlier this year,
beating 19 other quartets.
For taking the top award, the group will travel to Indianapolis, Indiana,
in October to take part in the Sweet Adelines world championships.
But not only will Sue compete with Perfect Timing at the Sweet Adelines
competition, she will also compete with the Christchurch City Chorus. That
group won the national title last year, which qualifies it to compete.
Sweet Adelines is an organisation with 35,000 members world wide, dedicated
to enhancing and promoting music through a barbershop forum. The international
competition will involve 50 quartets from around the world, and approximately
the same number for the chorus event.
Each quartet/group sings two songs on the first day of competition
and the top 10 are chosen for the second round, which involves a 20 minute
performance. Winners are decided from the second day of competition.
Sue joined the 12-year-old quartet Perfect Timing a year ago and is
looking forward to the chance to compete in an international forum.
She’s
no stranger to the stage however, having competed at the Sweet Adelines competition
with the Christchurch City Chorus three times previously – and once
with another quartet.
Singing baritone, Sue first started singing publicly 15 years ago. “Sweet
Adelines had a new members evening and I went along and enjoyed it,” she
says.
Sue performs throughout Christchurch at functions, mainly with the
Christchurch City Chorus, but also Perfect Timing. That can prove difficult
though as two members live outside of Christchurch – one near Paihia
and the other in Gisborne. They get together once a month to rehearse. “
Singing is a way of life,” says Sue. “There’s always something
that is challenging.”
