Wider group acheives goals
High level support is giving the former Auckland Safer City Council
(ASCC) a new edge.
SAFER AUCKLAND CITY is a joint initiative between police, Ministry of Justice,
Auckland City Council, Crime Prevention Unit and Ngäti Whätua. It
replaces the former ASCC and consists of an executive comprising agency and
organisation representatives, academics and high-profile local business people.
Betty McLaren is Safer Auckland City’s fulltime coordinator.
Police representative, Auckland City District Policing Development Manager
Inspector John Mitchell, says because there are so many influential
people in the executive, Safer Auckland City “has the grunt” to
achieve goals. “ASCC was good but not at high level. It lacked the traction
to get things done,” he says.
There have been several initiatives arising from Safer Auckland City,
including a business watch scheme in Rosedale, where commercial businesses
have formed their own security company to guard their premises.
There has also been a Junior Neighbourhood Watch programme established
in Mt Wellington and a report compiled on Mäori offending. “There
has been a lot of work on alcohol accords and now there is comprehensive information
about issues around the accords and the influence they have on the environment,” says
John.
