Nelson Homicide Update Monday 16 November 09

Police have released the name of the victim from the shooting at Branford Park in Nelson on Saturday evening.

He was Troy Minto, aged 22 of Nelson.

5 Nelson men will appear in the Nelson District Court this afternoon at 1pm

One man faces a charge of murder, and the remainder face charges of unlawful assembly and unlawful possession of a firearm. Investigation head, Detective Inspector John Winter said there was a possibility of further charges being laid against the 5, but that would depend upon the outcome of further enquiries.

Police would be seeking a remand in custody for all defendants while those enquiries were concluded.

Detectives completed the scene examination at Branford Park last night, and a post-mortem is now underway on the deceased.

The vehicle recovered from a Motueka address will be examined by ESR staff in due course.

Detective Inspector Winter said police were still interested in hearing from witnesses in 2 categories:

Those who were witnesses to the incident at Branford Park

Those who were privy to information immediately after the shooting, or who had information relevant to the inquiry

Detective Inspector Winter said that interviews with witnesses were continuing this week. Those who had already contacted police would be spoken to as soon as possible.

No final decision had yet been made on whether charges would be preferred against the other group from the incident at Branford Park. That would be reviewed once all information had been gathered and assessed.

Mr Winter thanked the public for their assistance to date.
