State Highway One, Waiouru

Emergency services are at the scene of a serious crash near the summit of the Desert Road (approx 1 kilometre south of Paradise Valley Rd), State Highway One north of Waiouru.
Initial reports are that it involves a truck and car.
Rescue helicopter has been dispatched to the scene, and the road is about to be closed until further notice.
North bound traffic diversions will be in place at Waiouru detour from State Highway One onto State 49 and South bound traffic at Rangipo from State Highway One onto State Highway 46.

An occupant of the car has died at the scene; it is unknown as to the cause of the crash.
Crash investigators and specialist heavy lifting equipment are at the scene.
At this stage the details relating to the person that died are unknown.
It is anticipated that State Highway One will remain closed for approximately the next 2 to 3 hours.
