Clive Hulme was born in 1911 in Dunedin and was a farmer until 1940 when he enlisted and embarked with the 2nd New Zealand Division. While at sea he was promoted to Sergeant. After being involved in the rearguard actions on Greece, he was evacuated to Crete with the majority of the New Zealand force.
On Crete Hulme served as 23rd Battalion Provost Sergeant until the German airborne invasion. Then, over an eight day period, Hulme ventured into enemy territory to seek out and kill snipers. Dressed in enemy camouflage uniform, Hulme accounted for 33 enemy snipers before he was wounded and evacuated.
On Maleme airfield - "he personally led parties of his men from the area held by the forward positions and destroyed enemy organised parties"
At Galatos - "threw grenades into the school and so disorganised the defence, that the counter-attack was unable to proceed successfully"
At 42nd Street near Suda Bay - "volunteered to account with the situation and stalked and killed the snipers in turn"
At Stylos - "penetrated the enemy lines, killed the mortar crew of four, put the mortar out of action"
Hulme returned to New Zealand and was released from the Army in 1942. Hulme purchased a carrying business in Te Puke in 1943 and continued in this trade until his retirement. Hulme died in 1982, in Te Puke, aged 71.
