Where are the Police Communications Centres?
When you call 111 and ask for Police, Telecom will transfer you to a Police Communications Centre in Auckland, Wellington or Christchurch.
Your call might be answered in another centre if the one closest to you is busy. Police Communicators are trained to a set standard and each centre has maps of the whole country so no matter where the call is answered, local police will be on their way.
The Northern Communications Centre in Auckland covers the area from Cape Reinga in the north to Turangi in the south. It serves a population of 2.1 million and receives about 942,000 calls a year.
Based in Wellington, the Central Communications Centre covers from Taumarunui and East Cape in the north to Wellington in the south. The population of this area is 1,000,000. Central Comms receives about 371,000 calls a year.
The Southern Communications Centre in Christchurch serves the South Island and Stewart Island - a population of nearly 1 million. It receives 360,000 calls a year.
Police share the same premises with the New Zealand Fire Service. Both emergency services use the same computer system and radio network.
