The 2001 Kia Kaha Art Competition was won by a Te Horo teenager, Luke Whitaker of Te Horo. Luke's sister, Rebecca came third and the second place went to Stephanie Burne from Palmerston North Girls' High.

The Kia Kaha Art Competition was organised by the New Zealand Police Youth Education Service as part of the YWCA's Week without Violence November 5-11 2001. The theme for the week was Voices against Violence.

The national competition was open to any young person of secondary school age.

The objective of the competition was to select artwork to appear on the covers of the secondary school Kia Kaha anti-bullying programme.

The competition was judged by a panel consisting of Tim Walker, the Director of the Dowse Art Museum, Penny Eames, the Director of Arts Access Aotearoa and Gill Palmer from the Youth Education Service.

Twelve other entries, including Emma Dixon from Palmerston North Girls' High School, were highly commended. The top fifteen entries will be on display at the Dowse Art Museum throughout December.

There will be a presentation ceremony for Luke and Rebecca Whitaker at the Levin Police Station on December 5 at 11am.

Stephanie Burne will receive her prize from S/Constable Bob Filbee of the Youth Education Service at a special assembly at Palmerston North Girls' High School on December 5 at 10am.

Note: Prizes were $500 for first, $300 for second and $200 for third.
