Police in Christchurch are investigating an alleged home invasion in Hanmer Springs on Monday 18th September.

At approximately 9:30pm, the victims were home at their Amuri Jet family business / home on Hamner Springs Road when the security buzzer went off in the main office, prompting one of the victims to check outside to see what the noise was. The victim was then approached by the suspect and forced back inside the address. The suspect was looking for a particular person and the victim told him that he must have the wrong address. The suspect responded by hitting the victim with his gun and splitting his face open.

The victim offered money and car keys but the suspect refused, carrying on to search the bedrooms before forcing a number of males into a bedroom where he has instructed the victim to tie his family up. After hearing a knock at the front door, the victim opened the door and told a Police officer that there were no issues but it was clear to the officer that the victim had been injured.

The suspect demanded the victim drive him from the property in his car. As they travel along Hanmer Springs Road, the victim jumped out of the moving vehicle before it rolled into a ditch. He ran back to his house as the suspect fired at him.

One of the victims fired back with two shots in self-defence, fortified the house as they waited for Police to show up. Police arrived, the suspect has decamped in the victim’s vehicle. The victim's 2017 Nissan X-Trail was recovered two days later in Christchurch near the corner of Swanns Road and Stanmore Road.

The suspect was described as:

  • Male
  • Possibly Māori
  • Approx 5’6”
  • Solid build
  • Wearing all black clothing and balaclava.
  • Carrying a single barrel firearm.
