Police in Whakatane are investigating an incident which took place at the intersection of Lord Cobham Ave and Churchill Street on Tuesday 17th January.

At about 8:00pm, the victim turned into Lord Cobham Ave where he noticed a silver sedan with four people inside. Ten minutes later, he has returned with his young child and headed towards Churchill Street.

The silver sedan has then cut off the victim’s vehicle and three of the four occupants have got out of the car and approached the victim. The first male instructed the victim to wind his window down while the second male has approached the passenger’s side.

The males have made threatening comments toward the victim and his child.

The third male has then approached the victim with a shotgun which he shoved in the victim’s face. The gunman pulled the trigger however thankfully the firearm did not go off as it was not loaded.

The males have walked away laughing while getting back into their vehicle which was described as an early 90’s silver 4-door sedan.

First male described as:

  • Māori
  • Stocky build
  • Approx. 179cm / 5’10”
  • Early 20’s
  • Brown eyes, short hair

He had a tattoo of fist on the outside of left lower leg and he was wearing a cap with ‘Compton’ written in white on front of cap, black jersey, black & white bandanna over his face, blue cut-off jeans and black Converse Chuck Taylor shoes.

Second male described as:

  • Māori
  • Stocky build
  • Approx. 184cm / 6ft
  • Early 20’s
  • Hazel eyes, hair in two braids to the shoulder

He had a cross tattoo on his right hand and two stud earrings in his left ear. He was wearing a black & white bandanna over his face, a black hoodie with a white “Black Power” emblem on the front, black jeans and blue Converse shoes.

Third male described as:

  • Māori
  • Slim build
  • Approx. 184cm / 6ft
  • Early 20’s

Brown eyes, thick eyebrows, long hair tied in a bun

He had a tattoo on his left forearm and was wearing a blue NFL shirt with white “61” on the front, blue jeans, black & white bandanna over his face and a chain bracelet on his right wrist.

He was holding a double-barrelled shotgun with the butt and stock sawn-off and roughly 50-60cm in length.

The fourth person and driver of the car was described as being a Male Māori and wearing a blue short sleeved shirt and black sunglasses.
