Police in Gisborne are investigating a fatal hit and run in Ruatoria during the early hours of Sunday 16th April.

Nelson Hari had been celebrating a wedding at the Te Heapera Marae before the 25-year-old decided to walk home around midnight.

At about 12:30am, a vehicle travelling towards the marae on Tapuaeroa Road has seen something on the road and upon closer inspection, realised it was a person.

Nelson received first aid at the scene but unfortunately could not be revived.

Police believe that two vehicles struck him that night, the first knocking him to the ground, and the second as he was lying on the road.

Police have identified the second car and its driver but it’s the first car that struck Nelson while he was walking that is crucial to this investigation.

Police are appealing for anyone who knows of vehicles in the area that sustained damage to the front around 16th April.

Nelson was much loved by his whanau and friends so if you have any information that could help bring them some answers, please contact Gisborne Police.
