Police are investigating the murder of 58 year old mother and grandmother, Roma Joseph (aka Midwood) who was killed in her own home in Tirau.

Between 3:00-3:30am on Monday 1st May, Roma’s neighbours were alerted to a series of thumping sounds coming from inside her Little Street home. Two people were observed at the address shortly before an ‘amber glow’ was seen coming from the house.

Shortly after that, witnesses have seen a silver 4-door sedan reversing out of Roma’s driveway. The Fire Service has attended the address and unfortunately located Roma deceased inside the house.

Initially Roma’s death was investigated as suspicious however Police have since established that the fire was deliberately lit and that Roma was seriously assaulted before the fire was started.

Police would like to speak with the person seen on CCTV walking past the Caltex forecourt on Main Road at 3:18am on Monday 1st May. There is a good chance that this person may have witness something vital to the investigation.

If you have any information that can help bring Roma’s whanau some closure, please contact the Operation Tranship enquiry team on 0800 766 211.
