Police in Whangarei are investigating an alleged aggravated robbery at the ANZ on the corner of Rust Ave and Bank St in Whangarei on Thursday 22nd March.

At around 11.30am, two males entered the bank, one produced a firearm and pointed it at both staff and customers to control the area while the second male loaded cash into a bag from the teller in the corner. The males then took off down Lover’s Lane and are captured on CCTV running between the council buildings and library. It is here that the men were spotted by a witness who decided to follow them until one of the men turned around and pointed the gun at him, at which point he decided to hang back and follow them from a distance as they ran down Second Ave.

The gunman is described as:

  • Male
  • Māori or Pacific Islander
  • 5’8’’ - 5’10’’ / 173-180cm
  • Wearing a grey ‘Everlast’ hooded top, dark pants and black gloves
  • Carrying a cut down rifle with a short silver barrel and brown wooden stop

The second male is described as:

  • Male
  • Māori or Pacific Islander
  • 5’8’’ - 5’10’’ / 173-180cm
  • Larger Build
  • Wearing a black sleeveless hooded top with distinctive white pattern and black pants with the word ‘Raider’ down one of the legs.

A red 2004 SS Holden Commodore with a loud muffler was also seen on Second Ave around the time of the robbery. Police are not saying that the vehicle is involved but they would like to speak to the occupants of the vehicle or anyone who saw it around the time of the robbery.

Whangarei Police would like to hear from anyone who may be able to help with this case.
