Operation burns hot offenders, locations

Operation Burn was a proactive operation policing the Glenfield and Northcote central areas over four days between 28 April to 1 May 2004.

“THE OPERATION, under the command of Sergeant Shane O’Connor, targeted hot offenders but also involved enforcing bail checks, curfew checks, warrants to arrest, wanted to interview matters, truants and obtaining DNA samples,” says Inspector Les Paterson, Relieving Operations Manager, North Shore City. It also policed hot locations through checkpoints, mobile patrols and high visibility patrolling.

“ The Glenfield and Northcote areas suffer a slightly higher rate of crime than the rest of North Shore City, hence the reason this operation was run. It was targeted at reducing volume crime including theft ex motor vehicles, burglary, dishonesty and violent offending. Some issues of illicit drug dealing were also looked into.”

Up to 77 police staff took part in Operation Burn. A total of 42 people were arrested for crimes including aggravated robbery and burglary. The high police presence in the area caused at least six wanted criminals to hand themselves in voluntarily. Police also impounded 10 vehicles and issued 161 traffic offence and infringement notices.

“ North Shore police have always been proactive, and in April, 11 new recruits boosted staff numbers,” says Les. “Also, activity such as Operation Burn arose out of other successful operations, such as Operation Chill last year.
