Public support tough line on speeding
drivers
A recent Herald Digi-Poll survey has revealed public support for
tough enforcement of speed limits.
National Road Policing Manager, Superintendent Steve Fitzgerald says
the results are encouraging after the high Easter road toll where speed
was a factor in a number of crashes.
"Just under half – 47.6 percent – of the 750 people surveyed
said the enforcement level was right, while nearly a quarter – 22
percent – said they wanted us to crack down even further on speed.
"Although 27.8 percent thought we were being too strict, it's
evident that the majority are comfortable with what we are doing or
what us to do
more. That's very encouraging," says Steve.
The poll was taken over nine days including the Easter break, which
saw the highest road toll in 10 years.
"Speed was a factor in six of the nine Easter deaths and for 36 percent
of those killed on the roads last year," says Steve.
