Building a modern NZ Police

The next step towards modernising Police legislation has been taken with the release of the scope of topics to be looked at during the review.

Commissioner Howard Broad says societal changes since the current Act was passed in 1958 makes it timely to look at what sort of Police legislation is needed for modern New Zealand.

“Nearly half a century ago there were few nonsworn staff in Police and little specialisation beyond general duties and the CIB. A one-size-fits-all style of policing prevailed.

“In 1958 New Zealand Police was the pre-eminent law enforcement agency. Today there’s a myriad of public, private and volunteer agencies. In short, policing in 2006 is more networked, co-operative and complex.  It’s high time to explore and better define the relationships, roles and boundaries of New Zealand Police,” says Howard.
