Sworn staff numbers top 8000
Sworn Police staff numbers have topped the 8000 mark for the first time in the organisation’s history, with the introduction of the latest group of 72 recruits to the Royal New Zealand Police College on 19 February. The 8000 milestone has been reached after a period of significant recruitment which has seen the organisation grow by 1000 sworn staff members since 2001. Factors contributing to the growth include an enviable attrition rate of 4.1 percent, a recently updated starting employment package of more than $50,000 and an increased average length of service. Human Resources General Manager Wayne Annan, says if the current trend continues, the number of sworn staff should increase to 8500 by 2009, achieving the current Government’s goal of adding 1000 additional officers. “I’m pleased with the progress made to date but there are still plenty of opportunities for quality candidates as we seek to boost our numbers even further ... particularly in the Auckland districts. James Whitaker, Recruitment Marketing Manager, says the latest flight of radio and television advertising is leading to increasing inquiries from people interested in joining the job. “It’s now hoped this will translate into good quality candidates,” says James. |
