Information encourages visitor safety

A multi-agency group has produced information to help visitors to New Zealand keep safe and enjoy their holiday.

The practical safety tips have been produced by NZ Police, the Department of Conservation, key representatives from the tourism industry and the Ministry of Tourism, with input from the Bus and Coach Association and Mountain Safety Council.

  • The safety advice covers the following areas:
  • Keeping safe on New Zealand roads
  • Keeping yourself safe
  • Keeping safe outdoors
  • Keeping your possessions safe
  • General information – such as New Zealand’s emergency number and the SAFE text messaging service.

Biker textingInspector Morris Cheer, Manager Community Support, PNHQ, says the collaborative approach and input to the project has reinforced a real commitment to provide visitors with some common sense advice about what they themselves can do to be safer while enjoying their holiday in New Zealand.

“While New Zealand is a relatively safe travel destination, we are not crime free, as recent incidents against tourists have shown.

“It’s important for visitors to be aware of this and look after themselves and their possessions just as they would in their home country.

“Of course, there is a responsibility on Police to investigate crimes by or against visitors, but it’s in everyone’s interests to take on board practical crime prevention advice so they will be less vulnerable.”

The keeping safe as a visitor to New Zealand information is available on the Police website at www.police.govt.nz/safety/visitors

A brochure has been produced and distributed by all agencies involved in the project. Other opportunities to promote the content are being explored. Translations of the content are likely in the future.
