Multilingual phrase book updated

The NZ Police multilingual phrase book has been updated to include a section on the New Zealand Bill of Rights Advice and Judges Rules Caution...

"Frontline especially investigative staff said it would be very useful to include the Bill of Rights Advice and Judges Caution translations in the phrase book," says Kefeng Chu, Strategic Ethnic Advisor, OoC.

"It is very important for people to clearly understand their rights and this can be difficult if English isn't your first language," says Kefeng.

"Providing information in a range of languages also helps us to communicate and build relationships with ethnic communities."

Kefeng says the translations in the phrase book are designed for immediate urgent use only where interpreters are not available.

"It's not designed to replace the use of face-to-face or telephone interpreters, but it should be shown to interpreters to ensure accurate and consistent interpretation," says Kefeng.
