Motorcycle ride a smashing success

Recent increases in motorcycle registrations and corresponding increases in death and injuries to motorcyclists prompted Police and ACC to mount a "High-Vis" ride recently.

The Auckland-based promotional event also included a demonstration of the devastating consequences when motorcycles crash at a range of speeds.

While motorcyclists make up only two percent of vehicles on the road, they account for 18 per cent of road claims received by ACC.

"41 percent of injury motorcycle crashes occur in situations where other motorists don't see the motorcycle and, in three quarters of cases, the motorcyclist was not at fault," says Inspector Heather Wells, Auckland City Road Policing Manager.
