History brought up to date

Items of historical significance at Christchurch Central Police Station recently received a spruce up with the help of staff from the New Zealand Police Museum.

Sophie Giddens and Kamaya Yates spent three days at Christchurch Central tidying up their historical display and mounting new labels.

“We’d heard there was a great display at the station, but didn’t realise how amazing it was until we started dusting off years of grime and grit,” says Sophie.

The objects have been on display for many years and will need rest from light exposure in the near future. Kamaya and Sophie were able to offer advice on what could be displayed instead.

“We’re working with Youth Education to create a display that can work for the many groups of school children who visit the station,” says Kamaya.

“One of our ideas is to develop the concept that ‘attention to detail solves crime’ as a basis for a practical activity using an old identikit.”

Sophie and Kamaya appreciated the wonderful hospitality and interest shown by Canterbury staff.

NZ Police Museum staff are dedicated to preserving police heritage and are available to care for objects, art and other items or to offer advice. You can contact Museum staff via museum@police.govt.nz
