Leadership programme wins HR award

The NZ Police Leadership and Management Development Framework has come runner-up in a regional Human Resources Institute of New Zealand (HRINZ) HR Initiative of the Year award.

Sue Christie, HR Manager: Organisational and Employee Development at Police National Headquarters, says the framework is designed to challenge organisational behaviour at all levels of Police, from the executive to the frontline.

“The framework provides a road map of the leadership development programmes offered within Police - including the Constables’ and Women’s Leadership Development Programmes.

“All leadership development programmes reinforce the NZ Police Core Competencies and Values and provide opportunities for participants to learn and practice leadership skills,” Sue says.

Sue and her team entered the HRINZ awards to benchmark Police leadership development activities against other public and private sector organisations.

“The judges were looking for ‘thinking outside the square’, and for demonstrated impact on organisational performance.”

The judging panel found the Framework was delivering good results, and said:

“With the constant political and media limelight that shines upon them, this initiative is a real and practical approach by NZ Police to positively influence the behaviours of police staff. The Framework, through changing behaviours, fits the business context ensuring public trust and confidence in the leadership of all levels of NZ Police for NZ citizens.”

Sue says the Framework has led to significant improvements in career development, and in the perception of how staff “think and do” leadership throughout Police.

“Around 1800 staff have participated in one or more leadership development programmes to date, and hundreds have gained nationally recognised qualifications. Programme participants report they are motivated and enabled to develop their careers and lead with confidence.”

The Framework is now being considered for the State Services Commission Public Sector Recognition award to be announced at the HRINZ National HR Awards this month.
